Visiting Highmark Stadium as an Away Fan: The Complete Guide

Highmark Stadium · 1 Bills Dr, Orchard Park, New York
★ The best tailgate in the NFL

Highmark Stadium in Orchard Park is home to the most famous tailgate in football. Bills Mafia has turned game day into a legendary, folding-table-smashing party in the parking lots — passionate, rowdy, and famously welcoming even to visiting fans. Add brutal late-season cold, the birthplace of the Buffalo wing, and Niagara Falls up the road, and it's a genuine bucket-list road trip. Here's how to do a Bills weekend right.

Getting There

Fly into Buffalo Niagara International (BUF), the area's main airport. The stadium is in Orchard Park, a suburb about 20–30 minutes south of downtown Buffalo, so plan to drive or rideshare — this isn't a transit setup, and there's no train to the gates.

One of the perks of this trip: Niagara Falls is close by and makes an excellent add-on. If you're traveling this far, it's worth building the Falls into the weekend.

Where to Stay

Downtown Buffalo is the sweet spot: it has the hotels plus a walkable food and bar scene, and it's a reasonable drive out to Orchard Park on game day. You get somewhere to enjoy the rest of the weekend and an easy trip to the stadium.

If proximity matters more, there are suburban hotels closer to the stadium, and some fans base themselves near Niagara Falls to make a weekend of it. Any of these work — but for the balance of nightlife and access, downtown Buffalo is the call.

Parking & When to Arrive

Make no mistake: this is THE tailgating experience in the NFL. Bills Mafia tailgating — folding tables and all — is legendary, and the lots open early with the tailgate as the main event, not a warm-up to it.

Arrive early. The tailgate is central to the whole trip, so get to the lots well ahead of kickoff to be part of it rather than catching the tail end on your way in.

Where Visiting Fans Sit

It's an open-air bowl with no obstructed views, so sightlines are good throughout and there are no bad-seat traps to avoid. The lower bowl and sideline are the classic spots if you want to be close to the action.

The real seating consideration here isn't the view, it's the weather. Late-season games get brutally cold, snowy, and windy, and the open bowl offers little shelter — so wherever you sit, dress for serious cold in December and January.

Food & What to Bring

You're in the birthplace of the Buffalo wing, so get the real thing in town — Anchor Bar and Duff's are the famous spots, and both are part of the pilgrimage. Tailgate food is central to the day too, so you won't go hungry in the lots.

Two things to plan for. Check the bag policy before you go, as NFL clear-bag rules apply. And dress in serious layers for late-season cold — Highmark is one of the coldest, snowiest venues in the league, and it is not the place to underdress.

The Pregame Scene

Here the tailgate IS the pregame, and it's the best in the league — the lots become a massive, rowdy, welcoming party that's every bit the reason to make the trip. If you do one thing before kickoff, it's spend time out in the lots.

There are bars near the stadium and in downtown Buffalo too if you want them, but be clear about why you're here: you come for the lot tailgate, and everything else is a bonus.

Insider Tips

Embrace Bills Mafia. They're passionate but famously welcoming and fun, even to visiting fans, so lean into the atmosphere rather than bracing against it. Just come prepared: dress for brutal cold late in the season and don't underestimate a Buffalo winter.

Put it together and the formula is easy — get to the tailgate early (it's the bucket-list part), get real Buffalo wings in Buffalo, and consider pairing the trip with Niagara Falls. Do that and you'll see why a Bills road trip is one of the most fun in the NFL.
