Visiting American Family Field as an Away Fan: The Complete Guide

American Family Field · 1 Brewers Way, Milwaukee, Wisconsin
★ Home of baseball's best tailgating

American Family Field (the old Miller Park) is famous for one thing above all: the best tailgating in baseball. Home to the Milwaukee Brewers, this retractable-roof park sits amid huge parking lots built for grilling out, with Bernie Brewer's slide, the sausage race, and a friendly, festive crowd. Here's how to do a Brewers road trip right.

Getting There

Fly into Milwaukee Mitchell (MKE), a short drive from the ballpark on the west side of the city off I-94.

There's no rail transit to the park, so you'll drive or rideshare — and honestly, driving is part of the plan here because of the tailgate.

Where to Stay

Stay in downtown Milwaukee for the city's bars, breweries, and lakefront, then drive out to the game — it's a quick, easy trip.

There aren't hotels right at the stadium, so base yourself downtown and drive; you're close to the park and the whole city.

Parking & When to Arrive

The park has huge parking lots made for tailgating — the pregame lot scene is the main event. Prepaid parking is smart, and a general lot pass gets you into the fun.

Arrive early and tailgate. This is the best lot scene in baseball — grills, bags, brats, and beer — so give yourself hours before first pitch to soak it up.

Where Visiting Fans Sit

It's a comfortable park with great sightlines and no obstructed views, and the retractable roof keeps games on rain or shine through Wisconsin's chilly spring.

Lower levels are pricier while the upper deck is good value. Watch Bernie Brewer's slide after homers and the famous sausage race — crowds are friendly and fun for visiting fans.

Food & What to Bring

This is Wisconsin, so get a bratwurst (with Secret Stadium Sauce), plus cheese and local beer — the ballpark leans into it.

Check the bag policy, as MLB clear-bag rules apply. The roof covers the weather, but bring a layer for cool spring and fall nights.

The Pregame Scene

The tailgate in the lots is the pregame — spacious, welcoming, and a genuine highlight of the trip.

For bars and food beyond the lots, downtown Milwaukee and the Historic Third Ward are a short drive away before you head to the park.

Insider Tips

Tailgate — it's the whole experience. Arrive early, bring or buy brats and beer, and enjoy the best lot scene in the sport. Watch Bernie's slide and the sausage race.

Stay downtown and drive out (no transit), pack a layer for spring/fall, and expect a warm, friendly crowd. One of the most fun away trips in baseball.
