Highmark Stadium in Orchard Park is home to the most famous tailgate in football. Bills Mafia has turned game day into a legendary, folding-table-smashing party in the parking lots — passionate, rowdy, and famously welcoming even to visiting fans. Add brutal late-season cold, Buffalo wings, and Niagara Falls up the road, and it's a genuine bucket-list road trip.
Getting There
Fly into Buffalo Niagara International (BUF), the area's main airport. The stadium is in suburban Orchard Park, about 15 miles (20–30 minutes) south of downtown Buffalo, so most fans drive. There's no train to the gates, but the NFTA runs Game Day Express buses to the stadium, and the designated rideshare zone is at the eastern end of ECC South Campus.
One of the perks of this trip: Niagara Falls is close by and makes an excellent add-on. If you're traveling this far, it's worth building the Falls into the weekend.
Where to Stay
Downtown Buffalo is the sweet spot: it has the hotels plus a walkable food and bar scene, and it's a reasonable drive out to Orchard Park on game day. You get somewhere to enjoy the rest of the weekend and an easy trip to the stadium.
If proximity matters more, there are suburban hotels closer to the stadium, and some fans base themselves near Niagara Falls to make a weekend of it. Any of these work, but for the balance of nightlife and access, downtown Buffalo is the call.
Parking & When to Arrive
Buy parking in advance on the Bills site — every official lot requires an advance-purchase pass, and event-day sales are limited to accessible parking. The venue is entirely cashless. Lots open 4 hours before kickoff.
Bills Mafia tailgating is legendary and half the reason to go — permitted in designated lots (the general lots and the Camper/RV Lot). Tents are OK if they don't block emergency lanes, charcoal grills must be raised 6"+ off the ground with coals fully extinguished before you enter, and tailgating ends at kickoff. This is the home of the famous table-slamming tradition.
Roof & Climate
Open air, no roof over the field.
The new Highmark Stadium is open air. There's no roof over the field. A steel canopy covers most of the seats for weather protection (and to trap crowd noise), but the bowl is deliberately exposed to Buffalo's elements, so dress for the forecast.
Where Visiting Fans Sit
The new bowl seats about 60,000 and is steep and stacked to trap noise — the Bills draw one of the loudest, most passionate crowds in the NFL, with "Shout" as the third-down anthem and corner-flag pyro after Bills scores. Sightlines are good throughout with no obstructed views, and the upper level includes the Labatt Skyline Deck.
The real seating consideration here isn't the view, it's the weather. The canopy covers most seats but the field is open to the sky, and late-season games get brutally cold, snowy, and windy — the upper deck feels 10–15°F colder, so dress accordingly for December and January wherever you sit.

Buffalo wings are the answer. Eat them at Bar-Bill Tavern or Duff's before the game. Also get the local staple beef on weck — roast beef on a kummelweck roll topped with kosher salt and caraway. Tailgate food is central to the day too, so you won't go hungry in the lots.

The Pregame Scene
Here the tailgate IS the pregame, and it's the best in the league — the lots become a massive, rowdy, welcoming party that's every bit the reason to make the trip. If you do one thing before kickoff, it's spend time out in the lots.
There are bars near the stadium and in downtown Buffalo too if you want them, but be clear about why you're here: you come for the lot tailgate, and everything else is a bonus.
